Jairo Antonio Sarria, 82, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at his home on September 30, 2026.

Family and friends are welcome to visit on Sunday, October 4th from 2-6pm in Las Rosas Bannworth Funeral Home, 1055 E. Jersey Street Elizabeth, NJ 07201.

Funeral service will commence on Monday, October 5th, 9am in the funeral home followed by a service at 10am.

Entombment will follow in St. Gertrude Cemetery & Mausoleum, Colonia, NJ.

Born on July 26, 1944, in Cali, Colombia, Jairo was the beloved son of the late Luis Serafino Oviedo and Julia Emma Sarria. As a first-generation immigrant from Cali, Colombia, he came to the United States with hopes of building a better life and creating a loving family. He made Elizabeth, New Jersey, his home and became deeply rooted in the community he proudly served.

Jairo was the beloved husband of Maria Noemi Montano and the loving father of Maricel Sarria and James Sarria. He was a cherished grandfather of five, great-grandfather of five, and great-great-grandfather of one. His family was a source of great pride and joy, and the love he shared with them will continue through the generations.

Jairo was a hardworking and dedicated man who spent much of his professional life working as a laborer in the manufacturing industry, including his employment with Ninro Carton Paper. His strong work ethic, generosity, and commitment to helping others became hallmarks of the life he built.

Beyond his family, Jairo was a pillar of the Hispanic community in Elizabeth and the surrounding areas. Known affectionately by many as “The Ambassador,” he became a familiar and respected presence throughout the community. He was known for reaching out to help his fellow Hispanics, offering guidance, support, friendship, and a helping hand to those in need.

To many, Jairo was more than a friend or neighbor—he was a community leader, a trusted confidant, and a source of strength. His dedication to helping others and his willingness to stand beside those who needed assistance earned him a special place in the hearts of countless people. His legacy as a pillar and legend within the Hispanic community will continue through the many lives he touched.

Jairo's journey from Cali, Colombia, to Elizabeth, New Jersey, was one of family, hard work, perseverance, and service to others. He created a legacy that extends far beyond his immediate family and will live on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchild, and the many members of the community who knew and loved him.

Jairo will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchild, extended family, friends, and the countless people whose lives he touched throughout the years.

He leaves behind not only cherished memories, but also a lasting legacy of family, community, generosity, and service to others.

Familiares y amigos están cordialmente invitados a acompañar a la familia durante el velorio el domingo 4 de octubre, de 2:00 p. m. a 6:00 p. m., en Las Rosas Bannworth Funeral Home, 1055 E. Jersey Street, Elizabeth, NJ 07201.

Los servicios funerarios comenzarán el lunes 5 de octubre a las 9:00 a. m. en la funeraria, seguidos por un servicio religioso a las 10:00 a. m.

Posteriormente, se llevará a cabo la inhumación en un mausoleo en St. Gertrude Cemetery & Mausoleum, Colonia, Nueva Jersey.

Nacido el 26 de julio de 1944 en Cali, Colombia, Jairo fue hijo amado de los fallecidos Luis Serafino Oviedo y Julia Emma Sarria. Como inmigrante de primera generación proveniente de Cali, Colombia, llegó a los Estados Unidos con la esperanza de construir una vida mejor y formar una familia llena de amor. Hizo de Elizabeth, Nueva Jersey, su hogar y se convirtió en una parte profundamente arraigada de la comunidad a la que sirvió con orgullo.

Jairo fue el amado esposo de Maria Noemi Montano y el querido padre de Maricel Sarria y James Sarria. Fue un abuelo muy querido de cinco nietos, bisabuelo de cinco bisnietos y tatarabuelo de un tataranieto. Su familia fue una fuente de gran orgullo y alegría, y el amor que compartió con ellos continuará de generación en generación.

Jairo fue un hombre trabajador y dedicado que pasó gran parte de su vida profesional desempeñándose como trabajador en la industria manufacturera, incluyendo su empleo en Ninro Carton Paper. Su fuerte ética de trabajo, generosidad y compromiso con ayudar a los demás fueron características que marcaron profundamente la vida que construyó.

Más allá de su familia, Jairo fue un pilar de la comunidad hispana de Elizabeth y de las áreas circundantes. Conocido cariñosamente por muchos como “El Embajador”, se convirtió en una presencia conocida, respetada y querida dentro de la comunidad. Era reconocido por tender la mano para ayudar a sus compatriotas hispanos, ofreciendo orientación, apoyo, amistad y asistencia a quienes lo necesitaban.

Para muchos, Jairo fue mucho más que un amigo o vecino; fue un líder comunitario, una persona de confianza y una fuente de fortaleza. Su dedicación para ayudar a los demás y su disposición para estar al lado de quienes necesitaban apoyo le ganaron un lugar especial en el corazón de innumerables personas. Su legado como pilar y leyenda de la comunidad hispana continuará a través de las muchas vidas que tocó.

El viaje de Jairo desde Cali, Colombia, hasta Elizabeth, Nueva Jersey, fue una historia de familia, trabajo arduo, perseverancia y servicio a los demás. Deja un legado que va mucho más allá de su familia inmediata y que continuará viviendo a través de sus hijos, nietos, bisnietos, tataranieto y de los numerosos miembros de la comunidad que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerlo y quererlo.

Jairo será profundamente extrañado por su amada esposa, sus hijos, nietos, bisnietos, tataranieto, familiares, amigos y por las innumerables personas cuyas vidas tocó a lo largo de los años.
