Sergio Luis Borges (“Don Sergio”), age 86 of Linden, passed away with family by his side at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in Rahway, NJ on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 9:57AM. He was born on August 24, 1931 in Las Villas, Cuba to the late Jose J. and Isabel A. Borges.
An immigrant from Cuba in 1967, Sergio came to the United States as a newlywed with his wife, Francisca, and their infant son, Norberto. In Cuba he studied Electro Mechanics and worked as a freelance photographer. Once in the United States, he became an employee of Wakefern Food, Corp. in 1967 while simultaneously pursuing his passion for photography establishing his own studio (Sergio Photo Studio) in Elizabeth, NJ. During this time he also obtained his real estate license becoming a part-time realtor in the local area. He subsequently retired from Wakefern Food, Corp. after 32 years of employment but continued as a full-time Realtor and freelance photographer for hire until his full retirement in 2010.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Francisca Borges; his daughter Lorraine Felix; his grandchildren, Giovani N. Borges, Sariah E. Felix and Isabella M. Felix; and his sister, Sara Esquivel. He is preceded in death by his eldest son, Norberto J. Borges and his parents.
The “Going Home” Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at The Camp of Jehovah Christian Church located at 664 Newark Avenue in Elizabeth, NJ on Thursday evening at 7:00PM in the main sanctuary. This will be followed by a Burial Service the following morning at the same location on Friday, February 23 at 9:00AM. A funeral procession to the Rosedale Cemetery will follow where there will be a brief Graveside Service to conclude the memorial proceedings.
